The First Four Trumpets: Earth, Sea, Waters, and Lights Struck
Revelation 8:7 sounds the first trumpet: hail and fire mingled with blood are cast upon the earth, burning a third of the trees and all green grass. The imagery strongly recalls the Exodus plagues, especially hail and fire, while Revelation intensifies the scene into an end-time judgment pattern. The Exodus background helps frame the trumpets as acts of divine judgment and deliverance.
Revelation 8:7–12 sounds the first four trumpets against earth, sea, fresh water, and heavenly lights. The judgments echo several Exodus plagues while also drawing on prophetic cosmic-judgment language. Repeated limitation to a “third” shows devastating but not yet total judgment, leaving the narrative poised for the more personal woes that follow.
When the trumpet judgments strike the sea and it becomes blood, Revelation reuses the Exodus plague pattern in which Egypt’s waters were turned to blood, now on an apocalyptic scale.
Jeremiah's wormwood-as-judgment imagery helps illuminate the bitter waters named Wormwood in Revelation 8.
Revelation’s darkening of sun, moon, and stars belongs to the same prophetic cosmic-darkness vocabulary used by Amos for judgment. This is a possible apocalyptic reuse, not a demonstrable quotation.
