Genesis introduces Melchizedek as king of Salem and priest of God Most High; he blesses Abram, and Abram gives him a tenth. Hebrews retells those distinctive details and builds a major argument from them.

Genesis 14 tells how Abram defeated the kings who had captured Lot. Hebrews explicitly looks back to that same campaign when it introduces Melchizedek meeting Abraham after “the slaughter of the kings.”

Hebrews says the sons of Levi who receive the priesthood have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people; Numbers 18 assigns Israel’s tithes to the Levites for their sanctuary service.

Hebrews 7 explicitly interprets Genesis 14’s Melchizedek as a priest-king pattern relevant to Christ’s priesthood. Its wording “made like unto the Son of God” supports typological correspondence while distinguishing Melchizedek from Jesus Himself.
