Moses Appeals to YHWH’s Name and Character
Moses does not argue that Israel is innocent. He appeals to what the nations will think and then quotes YHWH’s own self-description from Exodus 34: slow to anger, abundant in mercy, forgiving, yet not pretending guilt does not matter. Scripture is interpreting Scripture inside the story itself.
Christological trajectory: Moses here stands as an intercessor for a guilty people. The New Testament later presents Jesus as the greater mediator and priest who lives to intercede. Numbers 14 is not a line-by-line prophecy of the cross, but it is an important earlier mediation pattern.
