The Ascended Christ Gives Gifts for a Mature Body
Unity includes differentiated grace. Paul quotes Psalm 68’s victory-ascent language and applies it to Christ, then describes the ascended Christ giving apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers to equip the saints for ministry and build up the body. The goal is shared maturity: no longer children tossed by every teaching, but a body growing into Christ as truth is spoken in love.
Where this fits in the story: Psalm 68 celebrates God’s victorious ascent. Ephesians reads that victory through Christ’s descent, ascent, and distribution of gifts, making this an inspired Christological reuse rather than a merely devotional analogy.
