Second Kings 17 records Assyrian resettlement and mixed worship after the northern kingdom’s exile; Ezra 4 later reflects another stage in the region’s contested population and worship history. The connection is important background for Samaritan development but cannot be reduced to the claim that later Samaritans were simply foreign colonists.

Second Kings 17 is essential background for the later history of Samaria because it records Assyrian resettlement and mixed worship after Israel’s exile. John 4 stands centuries later, after substantial population, religious, and identity development, so the Kings passage should inform the background without being treated as a complete ethnography of first-century Samaritans.
