Jesus, Emmanuel, and the Fulfillment of Isaiah
Joseph learns that Mary’s pregnancy is “of the Holy Ghost,” receives the command to name the child Jesus, and is told why: he will save his people from their sins. Matthew then explicitly brings Isaiah 7:14 into the scene and translates Emmanuel for the reader: “God with us.” The passage therefore binds Jesus’ saving mission, miraculous conception, Davidic legal household, and divine-presence theme together from the beginning.
Where this fits in the story: Isaiah 7:14 belongs first to the Ahaz-era sign context and the larger Immanuel movement of Isaiah 7–9. Matthew’s inspired use must preserve that earlier horizon while also taking seriously his explicit application to Jesus.
Where Scripture takes it next: Matthew closes with Jesus’ promise, “lo, I am with you alway” (28:20), forming a powerful Gospel-wide presence frame with 1:23.
Evidence boundary: discussion of Hebrew ‘almah and Greek parthenos belongs in Deep Study. The Septuagint used parthenos before Christianity; Matthew’s citation should not be described as Christians later inventing a Greek wording to create the virgin-birth claim.
Who Jesus is — “Jesus” is tied by Matthew to the mission “he shall save his people from their sins,” while “Emmanuel” means “God with us.” Matthew closes the Gospel with the risen Jesus promising, “I am with you alway,” carrying the Emmanuel theme from beginning to end.
Presence / covenant lens: Emmanuel—“God with us”—is bigger than a Christmas caption. Matthew opens Jesus’ story with that name and closes with the risen Jesus promising, “I am with you alway.” Revelation carries the same presence trajectory to its final form: God’s dwelling is with humanity.
