Genesis 9 prohibits eating flesh with its life—its blood—and makes blood central to the moral treatment of living creatures. Leviticus 17 later states the principle even more explicitly: “the life of the flesh is in the blood,” then develops that blood-life relationship within Israel’s sacrificial law.

Leviticus 7 prohibits eating sacrificial blood; Leviticus 17 explains the theological rationale by locating the life of the flesh in the blood and saying God has given blood upon the altar to make atonement. Chapter 17 therefore deepens the earlier prohibition: blood is not ordinary food because it has an appointed life-and-atonement role before God.

Leviticus 3 prohibits eating sacrificial blood, and Leviticus 17 expands the rule by explaining that the life of the flesh is in the blood and that God has assigned blood an altar role in atonement. Chapter 17 therefore supplies the theological rationale behind the earlier prohibition and extends the blood rule in a broader covenant context.

Hebrews develops the sacrificial blood/cleansing relationship and states that forgiveness is generally associated with bloodshed under the law; it does not quote Leviticus 17:11 verbatim.

Acts 15 prohibits Gentile believers from things polluted by idols, sexual immorality, strangled meat, and blood. Many interpreters see a strong background in Leviticus 17–18, where resident aliens as well as Israelites are addressed in clustered rules about sacrifice, blood, and sexual conduct. The correspondence is serious but debated because the council never names Leviticus 17–18 as its source.
