The focus then turns to people especially vulnerable to exploitation. Israel must not oppress a stranger, because Israel itself was foreign in Egypt. Widows and fatherless children must not be afflicted; if they cry out, God says he will hear them and judge the oppressor. Lending to the poor is not to become an opportunity for interest or the permanent seizure of a necessary cloak.

The closing commands address reverence for God and rulers, firstfruits and firstborn offerings, and Israel’s calling to be a holy people.

Where this fits in the story: covenant holiness includes worship, sexual and economic responsibility, treatment of outsiders, and protection of people with little social power.

Evidence boundary: The passage can be discussed in its ancient social setting, but A careful reading should not invent motives for surrounding nations or pretend that the law eliminates every inequality of the ancient world. Romans 12’s “living sacrifice” can be a later thematic comparison to holy living, but Paul does not cite Exodus 22 here.
