Psalm 8, Human Dominion, and Jesus Crowned with Glory
Psalm 8 marvels that God remembers humanity and gives human beings dominion over the works of his hands. Hebrews sees a tension: the world is not yet visibly subjected to humanity as the psalm describes, yet “we see Jesus.” He was made lower than the angels for a little while, suffered death, and is now crowned with glory and honor. Jesus therefore fulfills the human vocation from within humanity. The passage does not erase Psalm 8’s teaching about humankind; it shows the human destiny reaching its decisive realization in the representative man, Jesus, whose suffering opens the way toward the promised world to come.
