What Is Man? Small beneath the Heavens, Yet Crowned with Honor
Looking at moon and stars, the psalmist asks why the Creator pays attention to fragile humanity. The answer is astonishing: human beings have been crowned with glory and honor and placed just below a heavenly level. The poem is about humanity’s God-given dignity and vocation within creation.
A major translation issue appears in verse 5. The Hebrew says humanity is made “a little lower than elohim,” a word that can refer to God or heavenly beings depending on context; the Greek Septuagint renders it “angels,” the wording reflected in the KJV and quoted in Hebrews 2. Hebrews then reads the psalm in relation to Jesus, the incarnate Son who shares humanity’s lowered condition and is crowned through suffering.
