The People Tremble – The Fear That Leads to Faith
As the final words of the Ten Commandments echoed across the wilderness, the people stood frozen in terror. Thunder rolled. Lightning flashed. The sound of the trumpet blasted through the air. Mount Sinai smoked like a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked. The presence of God was not abstract or poetic—it was unmistakably real and overwhelming.
The people were terrified. “Speak to us yourself and we will listen,” they pleaded with Moses, “but do not have God speak to us or we will die” (v. 19). They recognized something crucial: to stand unmediated before a holy God was unbearable. Their sin, fear, and mortality made the encounter too much to bear.
