Chronicles says Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number the people. Joab objects, the census is carried out, and David confesses that he has sinned greatly. The parallel in 2 Samuel 24 begins with the LORD’s anger and says he incited David, creating an important question about primary and secondary agency and the Chronicler’s theological framing. The texts should be compared openly rather than flattened into a slogan.

2 Samuel 24:1–9 1 Chronicles 21:1–6

First Chronicles retells David’s census but introduces Satan as the immediate adversarial agent, whereas 2 Samuel begins with YHWH’s anger against Israel. The two inspired accounts must be held together without erasing their different agency language or pretending the theological relationship is simple.
