David Orders a Census of Fighting Men
The LORD’s anger is kindled against Israel, and David orders Joab to number the people. Joab questions the command but obeys, traveling through the land before reporting the totals.
First Chronicles retells David’s census but introduces Satan as the immediate adversarial agent, whereas 2 Samuel begins with YHWH’s anger against Israel. The two inspired accounts must be held together without erasing their different agency language or pretending the theological relationship is simple.
Exodus 30 warns that a census of Israel requires ransom so that no plague accompanies the numbering, while 2 Samuel 24 ends David’s census with a plague. The Torah background is therefore suggestive, but the Samuel narrative never states that David’s sin was specifically failure to collect the Exodus ransom.
