David’s Charge concerning Barzillai’s Sons
In 1 Kings 2:1–12, the narrative focuses on david’s final instructions to solomon. This belongs to Solomon’s rise: David’s succession crisis gives way to the new king’s consolidation, request for wisdom, administration, and early prosperity. Read the section with an eye on the difference between God-given kingship and human ambition, and on the standards by which Solomon’s reign will later be measured.
David’s final charge to Solomon explicitly remembers Barzillai’s loyalty during Absalom’s revolt and commands kindness toward Barzillai’s sons. The later instruction therefore reaches directly back to 2 Samuel 19 and shows that covenant-like gratitude for loyal service remains active across the transition to Solomon.
