1 Kings 12:25–33
In 1 Kings 12:25–33, the narrative focuses on jeroboam’s golden calves. This belongs to the divided-kingdom story. Political fracture becomes religious fracture as rival worship, dynastic violence, prophetic warnings, and repeated royal evaluations show how the northern and southern kingdoms respond to the LORD after Solomon.
Hosea’s condemnation of Israel’s calf worship develops the idolatry institutionalized under Jeroboam and exposes the calves as human-made substitutes for covenant loyalty to YHWH. The prophet therefore gives later inspired theological interpretation of the northern kingdom’s foundational religious sin.
Hosea interprets Israel’s calf and Baal worship as deepening covenant rebellion, extending the religious crisis institutionalized under Jeroboam into the prophetic indictment of the northern kingdom. The later prophet treats the idolatry as an ongoing canonical offense, not an isolated royal policy.
