A Trumpet at the Temple: Covenant Broken, Calf Condemned
The trumpet announces covenant violation. Israel says, “My God, we know thee,” yet rejects what is good. The contradiction between confession and practice controls the section. Kings and princes are established without God’s approval, and silver and gold become idols that contribute to Israel’s destruction.
The calf of Samaria is singled out with biting irony: a craftsman made it, therefore it is not God. Hosea stands in the canonical line that begins with the golden calf in Exodus 32 and continues through Jeroboam’s calf sanctuaries in 1 Kings 12. Archaeology at Dan has uncovered a major cultic installation associated with the northern kingdom, but no surviving object allows us simply to announce, “this is the golden calf.” The archaeological evidence can illuminate the reality and scale of northern worship without turning the cultic installation into an identification the evidence cannot prove.
