Rizpah’s Vigil Leads to Honorable Burial
Rizpah protects the exposed bodies through the harvest season. Her vigil moves David to gather the bones of Saul and Jonathan and the executed descendants for burial in Benjamin, after which God is entreated for the land.
Second Samuel later remembers and completes the burial story that closes 1 Samuel: David retrieves the bones of Saul and Jonathan and explicitly recalls how Jabesh-gilead had rescued their remains from Beth-shan. The later scene turns the closing act of loyalty in 1 Samuel into remembered royal history.
Rizpah’s long vigil over exposed bodies should be read beside Torah’s command not to leave an executed body hanging overnight, creating a difficult burial-and-defilement tension. The tension is real but the exact legal applicability remains debated.
