All Israel Anoints David
The tribes gather at Hebron, confess their kinship with David, remember his earlier leadership, and acknowledge the LORD’s calling that he shepherd Israel. They make a covenant with him and anoint him king over all Israel. This shepherd-ruler calling becomes a strong Davidic foreshadowing behind Matthew’s presentation of Jesus as the ruler who shepherds God’s people; Matthew’s wording is best treated as a composite allusion, not a direct quotation of 2 Samuel 5:2.
