David Goes Up to Hebron
David asks the LORD where he should go and is directed to Hebron. Judah anoints him king, and David blesses the men of Jabesh-gilead for their loyalty in burying Saul.
David explicitly blesses the men of Jabesh-gilead because they showed covenant kindness by recovering and burying Saul’s body. Second Samuel 2 therefore reaches directly back to the burial scene in 1 Samuel 31 and interprets their action as loyal kindness worthy of blessing.
David’s gifts to elders and towns of Judah after recovering Ziklag’s spoil immediately precede his move to Hebron, where the men of Judah anoint him king. The connection shows social and geographic preparation for kingship without claiming that the gifts purchased the throne or mechanically caused his anointing.
