A Forgotten Favor – From Honor to Oppression
Exodus opens by deliberately reaching backward into Genesis. The sons of Israel who came to Egypt are named again, Joseph’s generation passes from the scene, and the family that entered Egypt becomes a people so numerous that the land is filled with them.
That growth is not merely demographic background. Exodus 1:7 piles up fruitfulness and multiplication language that strongly recalls the creation blessing of Genesis 1:28 and the promises that Abraham’s descendants would multiply. Genesis ended with the covenant promises still unfinished; Exodus begins by showing that those promises are already moving forward in Egypt.
