Saul’s Broken Oath Brings a Famine Crisis
After three years of famine David seeks the LORD and learns that Saul’s bloodguilt against the Gibeonites is involved. The Gibeonites appeal to the old oath and require seven male descendants of Saul to be handed over. In Christian canonical perspective, the grim resolution exposes the limits of Davidic justice and points by contrast toward the need for a final, once-for-all atonement; the chapter itself is not a direct prophecy of the cross.
