The Treaty Honored Despite the Deception
Joshua 9 is a lesson in discernment and integrity. The unity of Israel’s enemies shows the opposition God’s people face, while the deception of the Gibeonites reveals the danger of making decisions without seeking God’s counsel. Yet even in the misstep, the Gibeonites are spared and assigned service associated with Israel’s worship.
Second Samuel later explains a famine by Saul’s violation of Israel’s oath to the Gibeonites, showing that the covenant promise made in Joshua 9 remained morally binding centuries afterward.
Joshua’s designation of the Gibeonites as hewers of wood and drawers of water strongly echoes Deuteronomy’s covenant-community language for its lowest-status laborers. The rare paired phrase marks subordinate incorporation into Israel.
