The tribal totals are listed again, but this census is not merely repetition. The first generation has largely died, tribal sizes have changed dramatically, and the total now prepares for land distribution as well as military organization.
Ephraim and Manasseh’s territorial distinction continues the census structure that already treats Joseph’s descendants as two tribal groups. Joshua’s land map turns the tribal distinction already visible in the census into concrete inheritance geography within Joseph’s descendants.
