Rebellion, Shiloh, Judah, Zion, and David the Shepherd
The psalm ends by moving from Israel’s rebellion and the disaster at Shiloh to God’s surprising choice of Judah, Zion, and David. David is taken from tending sheep to shepherd Jacob, and he leads with integrity of heart and skillful hands. The historical psalm therefore closes not with Israel’s faithfulness but with God’s electing purpose.
For Christian readers, David’s shepherd-kingship forms an important trajectory toward Jesus, the Son of David and Good Shepherd. Revelation’s Lion of Judah and Luke’s promise of David’s throne belong to that larger canonical story. Still, Psalm 78:70–72 first celebrates God’s historical choice of David; its Christological force grows through the Davidic covenant and later Scripture rather than from an explicit NT quotation of these verses.
