Phinehas Son of Eleazar Acts at Baal-peor
An Israelite man publicly brings a Midianite woman into the camp during the crisis. Phinehas follows them, kills both, and the plague stops after twenty-four thousand deaths. The story is severe and belongs to Israel’s theocratic covenant setting; it should not be turned into permission for private religious violence.
YHWH says Phinehas turned away divine wrath through zeal for YHWH’s covenant and grants him a “covenant of peace” and enduring priestly covenant. Psalm 106 later remembers his action and says it was counted to him for righteousness.
Test the Tradition: some older Christian commentators call Phinehas a type of Christ because of zeal, peace, priesthood, and wrath turned away. The New Testament never makes that identification, and the comparison must stop well short of Phinehas’s violent act: Jesus gives himself for sinners rather than giving Christians permission to kill in God’s name.
Judges 20:28 identifies the priest at Bethel as Phinehas son of Eleazar, the same priest named in Numbers 25. That identification is an important internal chronological clue placing this civil-war episode early in the wider judges era.
