Israel Seeks the LORD and Suffers Two Defeats
Israel repeatedly asks God who should go first against Benjamin, yet suffers two devastating defeats. After weeping, fasting, sacrificing, and again seeking the LORD, the people receive assurance of victory. Verse 28 names Phinehas son of Eleazar as the priest, a major chronological clue that this dark episode may belong relatively early in the judges period despite its placement near the book’s end.
