A Woman’s Millstone Ends Abimelech’s Rule
At Thebez, Abimelech tries to repeat his tower-burning tactic, but a woman drops an upper millstone on his head. He asks his armor-bearer to kill him so people will not say a woman killed him, yet later Scripture remembers exactly that humiliation. The narrator closes by saying God repaid both Abimelech’s wickedness and Shechem’s treachery.
Second Samuel 11:21 explicitly recalls Abimelech’s death: a woman threw a millstone from the wall at Thebez. The later narrator expects readers to know Judges 9 as a cautionary military precedent.
POSSIBLE FORESHADOWING / HEAD-CRUSHING ECHO: an unnamed woman crushes the false king Abimelech’s skull, possibly repeating the woman-versus-enemy-head pattern of Genesis 3:15 that ultimately culminates in Christ’s defeat of the serpent.
