Kings, Stars, Kishon, and the Curse of Meroz
The song pictures kings fighting at Taanach, stars fighting from heaven, and the Kishon sweeping enemies away. Meroz is cursed because its inhabitants did not come to the LORD’s help against the mighty. The cosmic language presents the battle as larger than Barak’s army, while Deep Study distinguishes poetic imagery from claims that Scripture is describing a modern astronomical event.
Psalm 83 explicitly remembers Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon as a precedent for later prayer, turning the Deborah-Barak victory into remembered evidence that God can overthrow present enemies as he did before.
