The LORD Routes Sisera’s Army
Sisera gathers his chariots by the Kishon, but Deborah tells Barak that the LORD has gone before him. The narrator credits the LORD with routing the Canaanite army, and Barak pursues until the force is destroyed. The story deliberately undermines confidence in superior military technology: the decisive actor is the LORD, not Israel’s equipment.
Numbers 10 names Hobab in Moses’ wilderness travel negotiations; Judges 4 later identifies Hobab as Moses’ father-in-law in the ancestry of Heber the Kenite, carrying the family connection into the land narratives.
Samuel later names Sisera, captain of Hazor’s host, when recounting how Israel forgot the LORD and was sold into enemy hands, explicitly remembering the oppression narrated in Judges 4.
Hebrews 11:32 explicitly names Barak among its examples of faith. Judges 4:11–16 is used here as the representative reader anchor because Barak goes into battle and the LORD routs Sisera’s army; Hebrews’ commendation should not be read as endorsing every hesitation in the wider story.
