Human Guidance, the Ark, and a Prayer for YHWH to Lead
Moses asks Hobab to travel with Israel because his wilderness knowledge can help them locate camps, yet the ark still goes before the people as the sign of YHWH’s leading. Each time the ark sets out, Moses asks YHWH to rise and scatter his enemies; when it rests, he asks YHWH to return to Israel’s thousands. Psalm 68 later echoes the opening words of that marching prayer.
Christological trajectory: Psalm 68 takes up this “rise and scatter” language, and Ephesians 4 later quotes Psalm 68:18 in a passage about the ascended Christ giving gifts. The chain is Numbers → Psalm 68 → Christological use of the Psalm; Paul is not directly quoting Numbers 10:35.
