Land Yet to Be Taken
Joshua 13 marks a transition from conquest to inheritance. Though Joshua is old and much land remains to be possessed, God orders the territories to be assigned and reviews the eastern inheritances already given through Moses.
Joshua’s statement that very much land remains to be possessed fits Exodus’ earlier warning that God would not drive out the inhabitants in one year but “little by little.” The later situation therefore matches the Torah’s expectation of progressive rather than instantaneous occupation.
Judges opens by showing the unfinished local occupation task anticipated in Joshua 13, demonstrating how broad conquest summaries and continuing tribal failures belong together rather than contradicting one another.
