The Division of the Land at Gilgal
Joshua 14 focuses on the distribution of land and highlights the faith and perseverance of Caleb. Forty-five years after the wilderness spy mission, Caleb appeals to the promise made through Moses and receives Hebron.
Jacob’s elevation of Ephraim and Manasseh in Genesis 48 gives Joseph two tribal lines; Joshua 14 later reflects the inheritance consequence by counting Joseph’s descendants as two tribes. A patriarchal family decision becomes enduring national structure.
The casting of lots for tribal inheritances directly fulfills Moses’ instruction that the land be divided by lot according to the tribes. Joshua’s allotment scene is therefore not merely similar to Numbers; it is the narrated execution of the earlier land-distribution command under the appointed leaders.
