The People Come Up from the Jordan
Joshua 4 captures the importance of remembering and declaring God’s works. The twelve stones taken from the Jordan became a physical testimony to God’s faithfulness and power, ensuring that future generations would know the story of His deliverance.
Joshua’s Jordan crossing closes with the same broad deliverance sequence seen at the Red Sea: the waters remain restrained until the whole people have crossed, then return after Israel reaches safety. The later story deliberately casts entry into the land in an Exodus-shaped pattern while changing important details such as the ark and priestly leadership.
