Israel Crosses the Jordan
Joshua 3 records Israel’s miraculous crossing of the Jordan River. God’s presence, symbolized by the ark of the covenant, led the way, and the waters stopped so the people could pass on dry ground.
Israel’s passage through the Jordan on dry ground deliberately replays the Red Sea crossing, now bringing a new generation into the promised land. Both narratives feature supernaturally restrained waters and national passage, and Joshua explicitly frames the event in continuity with Moses.
Psalm 114 poetically joins the sea’s flight with the Jordan turning back, giving later inspired testimony that Israel’s Jordan crossing belonged to the same divine-deliverance memory as the Exodus sea crossing.
Elijah’s division of the Jordan in 2 Kings 2 strongly recalls Joshua’s Jordan crossing and places prophetic succession within Israel’s larger memory of God opening waters for covenant transition and mission.
