The Long Way Around – God’s Sovereign Detours
Deuteronomy 2:1–15 is the movement “The Long Way Around – God’s Sovereign Detours.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as the LORD spake unto me: and we compassed mount Seir many days.” It closes with: “For indeed the hand of the LORD was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.”
Within the book’s larger story, this section advances several important biblical threads. Nations, Israel, Blessing, and Judgment: Israel must respect territories God has granted to related nations, placing Israel’s land story inside God’s rule over all peoples. Land, Inheritance, Exile, and Return: God assigns lands not only to Israel but also to Edom, Moab, and Ammon, showing His sovereignty over national inheritances.
