Moab and Ammon — A Dark Origin That Reappears throughout the Biblical Story
Genesis 19 closes with a disturbing family episode. Lot’s daughters, isolated in the mountains after Sodom’s destruction, intoxicate their father and become pregnant by him. The sons born from these unions are named Moab and Ben-ammi, ancestors of the Moabites and Ammonites. Genesis is explaining the origin of two peoples who will repeatedly intersect with Israel’s later history.
Deuteronomy explicitly remembers this ancestry. Israel is told not to seize the lands of Moab or Ammon because those peoples are “the children of Lot.” The difficult Genesis family story therefore becomes part of the Bible’s later geopolitical and covenant history rather than disappearing after one chapter.
