The passage establishes several facts that matter for the rest of Exodus without requiring us to invent Moses’ private thoughts. Moses identifies the Hebrews as “his brethren,” acts against oppression, is rejected as an unauthorized ruler or judge, becomes a fugitive, and begins a new life in Midian. Acts 7:23–29 later interprets this episode by saying Moses supposed his brethren would understand that God was giving them deliverance by his hand, but they did not understand.

Where this fits in the story: Moses cannot deliver Israel by an impulsive act of violence. The deliverance that follows will begin with God hearing Israel’s groaning, remembering his covenant, and calling Moses from the wilderness.

Evidence boundary: Exodus does not tell us that Moses lived in luxury, describe his private emotions at the well, or say that he consciously understood his years in Midian as leadership training. Those are possible reconstructions, not statements of the passage.
