The Earth Opens and Fire Consumes the Incense Offerers
YHWH separates the congregation from the rebels. Dathan and Abiram’s households are swallowed by the earth, while fire consumes the 250 men offering incense. Psalm 106 and Jude later retell Korah’s rebellion as a lasting warning about envy, unauthorized religious ambition, and rejection of God-given authority.
Jude says the intruders are following “the gainsaying of Core”—Korah. Numbers 16 tells that story: Korah rejects God-given authority, leads a rebellion, and comes under judgment. Jude uses Korah as an old warning for a new rebellion.
Psalm 106 recalls envy against Moses and Aaron, the earth swallowing Dathan and Abiram’s company, and fire burning the wicked, directly retelling the rebellion complex of Numbers 16.
