YHWH Places His Name on Israel
Aaron and his sons are told to bless Israel with three lines that move from blessing and protection, to YHWH’s shining face and grace, to his lifted face and peace. The closing explanation matters: by speaking this blessing, the priests “put” YHWH’s name upon the people, while YHWH himself is the one who blesses. Centuries later, versions of these words were inscribed on tiny silver amulets found at Ketef Hinnom in Jerusalem.
Test the Tradition: Christian interpreters have sometimes seen the threefold repetition of YHWH’s name as a foreshadowing of the Trinity. That can be presented as traditional Christian reflection, but Numbers itself does not explain the three lines as three divine Persons, and the doctrine should not be “proved” by counting repetitions.
