Like a Nursing Mother and a Father: A Life Worthy of God
Paul describes the mission team with family imagery: tenderly caring like a nursing mother and personally exhorting like a father. They shared not only God’s gospel but their own lives, while working night and day so they would not burden the new believers. The goal was that the Thessalonians would walk worthy of the God calling them into his kingdom and glory.
Where this fits in the story: Moses once described the impossible task of carrying Israel “as a nursing father” in Numbers 11:12; Paul’s own imagery moves through both maternal and paternal care. His manual labor reappears in Acts 18 and becomes an explicit example in 2 Thessalonians 3.
