Sowing and Reaping Generously
Paul uses sowing and reaping to describe generosity without turning giving into a mechanical wealth formula. Each person should give as decided in the heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, because God loves a cheerful giver—language closely related to the Greek Proverbs tradition. He then quotes Psalm 112:9 about the righteous person who scatters gifts to the poor.
The God who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food also supplies and multiplies resources for generous righteousness, echoing Isaiah 55:10. The purpose of being enriched is generosity, which through Paul’s ministry produces thanksgiving to God, not self-indulgence.
Second Corinthians and Galatians both use sowing-and-reaping imagery to frame generosity and persevering good.
