Jeremiah’s Call and Vision
The book of Jeremiah opens with an introduction to the prophet, giving his lineage and the time in which he lived, spanning the reigns of Josiah through Zedekiah, leading up to the exile. God’s word comes to Jeremiah with a personal calling. The Lord tells him that before he was formed in the womb, he was known and appointed as a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah hesitates, declaring his youth and inexperience, but God responds with reassurance, promising to be with him and placing His words into Jeremiah’s mouth. Jeremiah is then given the authority to uproot, tear down, destroy, overthrow, build, and plant. This moment echoes the eternal plan of God seen throughout Scripture.
