The Bridegroom and His Friend
As Jesus’ ministry grows, John’s disciples worry about competition. John answers by refusing rivalry: a person can receive only what heaven gives, and he has already said he is not the Christ. He describes Jesus as the bridegroom and himself as the bridegroom’s friend who rejoices to hear his voice. In the Old Testament, bridegroom and marriage language frequently depicts the LORD’s covenant relationship with his people, especially in Isaiah and Hosea; John’s use therefore carries a significant canonical resonance without requiring that every marriage image be a direct prophecy. The Baptist’s conclusion—“He must increase, but I must decrease”—defines faithful witness.
