Noah Named — Hope for Comfort from the Cursed Ground
Genesis 5 returns to its death refrain after Enoch, but the genealogy ends with a name filled with expectation. Lamech names his son Noah and says, “This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.” His words explicitly reach backward to Genesis 3:17, where the ground was cursed because of Adam.
The line from Eden is therefore still alive in the reader’s memory: Adam’s sin → cursed ground and painful toil → generations repeatedly die → Lamech longs for relief → Noah is introduced as a hoped-for source of comfort. Genesis has not yet explained exactly how that hope will unfold. The chapters that follow will show Noah finding grace, walking with God, surviving judgment through the ark, and standing at the beginning of a renewed post-Flood world.
