How to Behave in the Household of God
These verses state why Paul is writing: Timothy must know how people ought to conduct themselves in “the house of God,” identified as the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth. The household image explains why so much of the letter concerns relationships, leadership, widows, money, reputation, and care. Church order is family order under the living God.
Across Scripture, “house of God” can describe sanctuary, but the New Testament repeatedly applies temple and household imagery to God’s people. Ephesians speaks of believers as members of God’s household and a holy temple; 1 Peter calls them living stones being built into a spiritual house. First Timothy adds a memorable public image: the church does not invent the truth, but it is commissioned to hold it up and give it visible support in the world.
