Who Is This Coming from the Wilderness?
The scene changes from private searching to public spectacle. A perfumed column rises from the wilderness, and Solomon’s couch appears surrounded by sixty battle-trained warriors with swords ready against night danger.
The passage fuses romance, wealth, military security, and royal procession. Myrrh, frankincense, merchant powders, armed retainers, and Solomon’s name make the love poem suddenly political and ceremonial.
The Dead Sea Scrolls preserve this section in multiple Song manuscripts, giving readers a rare chance to see the biblical text itself in ancient fragments. Those manuscripts are evidence for the Song’s early textual transmission; they do not prove when the poem was originally composed or that Solomon personally wrote it.
