The Covenant Is Ratified with Words, Sacrifice, and Blood
The LORD calls Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy elders to come up toward the mountain, while only Moses is to draw near to the LORD. Moses tells the people all the LORD’s words and judgments, and the people answer together that they will do what the LORD has spoken.
Moses writes the LORD’s words, builds an altar at the foot of the mountain, and sets up twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel. Young men offer burnt offerings and peace offerings. Moses places half the blood in basins and sprinkles half on the altar.
He then reads the book of the covenant to the people. They again promise obedience. Moses sprinkles blood on the people and declares, “Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.”
