Passage Overview · Free · James 5:19–20
Turning a Wanderer Back from the Error of His Way
James ends without a conventional farewell. Instead, he imagines someone wandering from the truth and another believer turning that person back. Restoring the wanderer “shall save a soul from death” and “shall hide a multitude of sins.” The entire letter finishes with rescue, not abstraction.
Where this fits in the story: prophets and wisdom traditions repeatedly contrast the way of life with the way that ends in death. Jesus speaks of seeking the lost and restoring the straying sheep. James has spent five chapters exposing paths that lead toward death—desire, partiality, dead faith, destructive speech, worldly friendship, arrogant wealth—and now ends with a community helping someone return to the way of life.
