Born Again by the Living and Enduring Word
Peter connects new birth with a new family ethic: those purified in obeying the truth are to love one another fervently from the heart. The seed that produced this new life is not perishable but imperishable—the living and abiding word of God. Peter then quotes Isaiah 40: humanity is grass and its glory fades like a flower, but the word of the Lord endures forever. The surprise is what Peter says next: this enduring word is the message now preached as gospel. Isaiah’s announcement of enduring divine speech in the context of comfort and coming good news becomes part of Peter’s explanation of Christian rebirth and enduring hope.
