The LORD My Rock When the Cords of Death Surround Me
Psalm 18 is closely paralleled by David’s song in 2 Samuel 22, making the historical-canonical connection unusually concrete. David names the LORD as rock, fortress, deliverer, shield, horn of salvation, and high tower, then remembers being surrounded by death and calling on God.
This is first a royal thanksgiving for real deliverance. Its importance for Christology comes through the Davidic royal trajectory and the New Testament’s later use of the psalm, not by turning each defensive metaphor into an individual prediction of Jesus.
